30 Hour Famine

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

30 Hour Famine is a national teen movement to end world hunger, and we’re all about that!  On May 7-8, we will be participating in a different kind of 30 Hour Famine.  Our fast (eating no food, only drinking water and/or juice) will start individually that Friday at 6am (yes, that means fasting through school) and end at 12 noon on Saturday.

We’re going to do this together with students at Wildwood Church of God in Ashland, KY.  We will leave Eastland at 5pm on Friday and return at 3:30 on Saturday after our Break-the-Fast meal.

The cost is $15 which includes an awesome t-shirt, food/water, games, and building materials.  “What? Building materials?”  That’s right.  We will actually be sleeping overnight in “houses” we build out of cardboard, much like people in poverty do all over the world.

You need to turn in your registration and $15 by April 28th to get the t-shirt.  Registrations can be found in the youth room or here-  30 Hour Registration and Consent.  You can also download our information sheet here- 30 Hour Famine Info Sheet.

So, get ready to “starve” so that someone else can eat!

Trivia Night Fundraiser

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

You have probably been getting emails about this, but here it is again!  On Saturday, April 17th, Nancy Hall, our Children’s Pastor, is helping us host the annual Trivia Night as a fundraiser for students!  Thanks, Nancy!  Trivia Night is always a blast.  Teams of 8-10 decorate their table, dress up according to the theme, and try to answer questions together.  The doors open at 6pm for table decorating, and the event starts at 7pm. The theme this year is “I LOVE ____!” There is always a prize for best table decorations.

There are several ways for your student to get in on the fund-raising action:
1) Help Nancy with Questions- Nancy will take about 10 students to help find good ones.
2) Help run the Trivia Night- don’t participate in the Trivia and help! She will need 6 students.
3) Ask people to form a team to sponsor you- You get half of the registration money for each table who participates on your behalf.
4) Gather door prizes- The more donated items (big or small) we have, the better turn-out we will get.

Students who are helping that night need to be there at 4:30pm to help set up tables and get ready for the night.  Be prepared to stay to about 9:30pm to help clean-up afterward.

If you want to help in any way, please contact Nancy (nancy@eastland.org) and get the word out to people that they need to participate and sponsor you at their table!!!

Spring Break Service Blitz

Friday, March 26th, 2010

This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, you’re out of school, but we’re in action with the Catholic Action Center!  Rachel Megill is heading this project up, and she needs lots of help!  Please come to a brief informational meeting in the youth room on Sunday after 2nd service.

Each evening, we will be meeting at Eastland each evening at 5pm and driving to their different meeting sites for their “Circle of Care” groups They are basically small support groups for people who are homeless and recently off the streets.  We will be providing food for them and ourselves, playing games, and participating in their discussion of Same Kind of Different as Me by Hall and Moore.  Here’s our plan-

Monday – “The Village People” in Cardinal Crossing Meeting Room, Village Branch Library
Tuesday – Nicholasville “Chosen Ones” – Edgewood Baptist Church, Nicholasville
Wednesday – “Preakness People” – Preakness Apartments Clubhouse, Hillrise Court, off Versailles Rd.

We will be back at Eastland around 7:30 on Monday and Wednesday and 8:30 on Tuesday (since it is in Nicholasville).  See you there!

Egg Project Update

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

We are now OUT of Vanilla and Chocolate Fudge.  We still have Chocolate Fudge Nut (walnut), so if you have someone who has ordered a Chocolate Fudge, you might want to see if they would take a Nut one instead.  Also, we are running low on Mint and Coconut, so if you have orders for those, please pick them up as soon as possible.  Good job selling, guys!  You’re doing great!  And just in case you’re wondering…
